StudentPunch - A Mix of Everything Student! - Top Ten Movies For Valentines Day Love In

titanic-3Valentine’s Day is drawing near, and what better way to celebrate than with a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates and a lovely romantic movie? So just for you lucky people, StudentPunch has compiled the ultimate list of the best love stories...EVER. Featuring Love Actually, Pretty Women, Moulin Rouge, The Notebook and many many more.

10: Love Actually

Love stories intertwine in this Christmas favourite. The Prime Minister falls in love with his maid; the Best Man pines over the bride; a married boss considers adultery with an employee; a writer falls in love with his Portuguese housekeeper, and a devastated widower overcomes his loss by helping his step-son get the girl of his dreams. At times hilarious and heartbreaking, it is an authentic depiction of true love, with all the ups and downs along the way.

9: Ghost

Even death can’t come between couple Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze: his spirit remains on earth to protect his wife after he is murdered. Everyone knows the famous pottery-wheel/Unchained Melody scene, but the rest is a surprisingly decent thriller, as Swayze teams up with Whoopie Goldberg’s psychic in order to find his killers.

8: Pretty Women

Julia Roberts’ ‘hooker with a heart’ falls for Richard Gere’s businessman in this sassy rom-com. Edward hires beautiful prostitute Vivian to accompany him to various social events, and romance and complications ensue. It’s the perfect blend of comedy and romance in a heart-warming smash you’ll want to see again and again.

7: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Joel (Jim Carrey) finds out that his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) has had all her memories of him erased, and so he decided to undergo the same process. Reliving their time together as the procedure takes place, Joel realises that there are some memories that he doesn’t want to lose...This wonderfully fresh and original film teaches us that every relationship has its highs and lows, but it’s better to tolerate the bad times than to miss out on the good.

6: Moulin Rouge

What list is complete without a musical? Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman prove they can hold a tune in Baz Lurhmann’s extravagant showstopper, set within the dazzling world of the Moulin Rouge. Christian is an idealistic young poet who falls in love with the star courtesan, Satine, and is drawn into a love triangle with the club’s rich patron. Can true love conquer all?

5: Dirty Dancing

Patrick Swayze, holiday romance and fantastic dance routines...Dirty Dancing is the ultimate chick-flick. Spending the summer at a holiday camp with her family, privileged Baby (Jennifer Grey) becomes infatuated with rebellious dance instructor Johnny Castle (Swayze). When Johnny’s dance partner falls ill, she steps in to learn the routine for the camp’s talent show, and the mismatched pair fall in love to the strains of Eric Carmen’s ‘Hungry Eyes’. Nobody puts Baby in a corner!

4: True Romance

Christian Slater’s Clarence falls in love with hooker Alabama (Patricia Arquette), and they go on the run with a suitcase fall of drugs in this Tarantino-scripted comedy-thriller, the perfect date movie for those who like their romance with a bit of blood and gore. ‘Coz nothing says ‘I love you’ like killing your girl’s pimp.

3: Titanic

Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) meet and fall in love aboard the ill-fated Titanic. Rich girl Rose boards the ‘unsinkable’ ship with her fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane); meanwhile, drifter Jack and his friend Fabrizio win third-class tickets for the Titanic’s maiden voyage...The “flying” scene at the bow of the ship must be one of the most iconic love-scenes ever, and the couple’s brief romance has gone down in movie history.

2: The Princess Bride

One that your man will enjoy too: swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess...and OK some soppy, romantic stuff too! It’s good family fun as Westley (Cary Elwes) sets out to rescue his beloved Buttercup (Robin Wright) from the clutches of the evil Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), who wants to make her his bride.

1: The Notebook

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are the perfect couple in one of the most romantic films of all time. An old man (James Garner) reads his companion (Gena Rowlands) the story of Noah and Allie, a young couple who spend a summer madly in love, but soon find themselves separated by family, war and circumstance. But the years and distance cannot lessen their feelings for each other, and a surprise reunion forces Allie to choose between her handsome fiancée Lon (James Marsden) and her first love. It is the on-screen chemistry between the two leads that really makes the film work, and ensures we feel every emotion along with them. The ‘reveal’ is easy to see coming, but the ending is both heartbreaking and uplifting, and every girl will wish that they had a guy like Noah.

So that’s my top 10; if I’ve missed your favourite, why not leave a comment and let us know?
