The Music Of Love
February 14th: the most romantic date on the calendar. All over the world, couples will be celebrating with fancy dinners, gallons of red wine, and thousands of red roses. And what better to make this night even cosier than a top notch soundtrack.
When it comes to the theme of love, there are the classic love ballads. Artists such as Barry White, Marvin Gaye, as well as more contemporary artists such as Bruno Mars and The Script, are all passionate in conveying love through their music. However, although these artists’ music may provide the staple diet for a loving relationship, when we hear them too much at this time of year, their music, (although great), can become rather clichéd. For this reason, let’s take a look at some alternative songs, which demonstrate just as much passion and emotion as the usual suspects.
First of all, ‘Couldn’t Love You More’, by the late John Martyn. This ballad has love and adoration written all over it. From his romantic words, to the passion lying within his voice, which altogether creates his ultimate message: his love for his sweetheart is unchangeable. Martyn’s words describe how the love he has for his partner is so intense, that he could not possibly love her any more than he already does, and no matter what she did, his love will be maintained at this level forever. He displays a smouldering huskiness in his voice, which compliments his lyrics, and the acoustic accompaniment of the song, perfect for creating an intensely romantic atmosphere. All in all, this is the perfect love song.
Next, ‘You Belong To Me’: a song which has been recorded by over fifty different artists over the 20th and 21st Centuries. The particular version in question is that of the French singer, songwriter, model, and now the country’s First Lady, Carla Bruni. The vast amount of artists who have covered this song, emphasises that it suits almost any voice. However, with Bruni’s mellow, almost whispered vocals, this version is particularly mesmerising. Again, this song has an acoustic accompaniment, and also a harmonica bridge, giving it a bluesy feeling. The song deals with the idea of physical separation from a loved one, and no matter how far apart they may be from each other, they will always stay faithful to one another: a perfect message of love.
Hoping everyone has a fantastic Valentine’s Day!
