The Boy Who Trapped The Sun
Some days I do genuinely like my postman, some days I do hate especially when he brings lovely bits of paper from the bank. Today, fortunately, was one of the later.
The reason behind this was this morning he brought me a copy of The Boy Who Trapped The Sun’s debut album, Fireplace. I have been listening to TBWTTS , or Colin MacLeod from Lewis, for a couple of months now and have become a rather big fan of his Scottish tinged music.
Colin worked his way through many thrash-punk bands in Lewis (I am as surprised as the rest of you that there are thrash-punk bands in Lewis) before heading off to London to chase a career as a solo artist. Noticeable successes so far include his single “Home” (one of the stand out tracks of the album) being used to open an episode of Hollyoaks. The album touches on Colin’s experiences in life so far and is full of emotion and angst, this is no more obvious than in the song “Home”. The stand out track for me personally is “Antique Cobweb” which closes the album. The song is deep with a wonderful heavy piano sound. The hidden song at the end though is what really gets me. Almost spoken in both English and Gaelic the song is truly beautiful and I am sure will see some wet eyes at live performances. Maybe my nationalistic views draw me towards this song more than other though.
Colin is obviously a great lyricist and you can see him drawing on many influences. This is no more evident than on “I See You”, here can clearly feel not only the folk influence but also hints of classical music and even country and western.
“Fireplace” is a solid debut offering and for TBWTTS success surely awaits.
“Fireplace” is released on 12th July on Geffen records. Catch TBWTTS at TITP.
