MIsfits Series 2
With a brilliant cast, witty script and original storyline, Misfits was one of the best TV shows of last year. And with the second series just under way on E4, it seems like a good time to catch up with the characters and remind ourselves of what happened last year. This WILL contain spoilers, so don’t read if you don’t want to know! You have been warned.
Often described as a cross between Skins and Heroes, or even The Inbetweeners with ASBOs, Misfits follows a group of young offenders who are caught up in an electrical storm as they begin their community service. They soon realise that the storm has given them unusual powers: chav Kelly (Lauren Socha) can hear what people are thinking; former athlete Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) can rewind time when he does something he regrets; shy Simon (Iwan Rheon) turns invisible when he is being ignored; a touch from the beautiful Alisha (Antonia Thomas) fills people with uncontrollable lust, and Nathan (Robert Sheehan)...well, as we found out in the series 1 finale, Nathan is immortal. Not as great as it may sound though, as he is currently trapped 6ft under after his untimely ‘death’ and burial last season.
Their probation officer Tony was also affected by the storm: his anger issues mutated into uncontrollable homicidal tendencies, and the gang were forced to kill or be killed - an act that tied them together in secrecy. After hiding Tony’s body, the gang came under the suspicion of his co-worker and fiancée, Sally, who refused to believe that Tony had left her. By seducing Simon, she was able to get hold of his phone - on which, as a budding filmmaker, he had recorded much of what had happened over the last few episodes – and discovered footage of the gang discussing the murder. In the struggle to retrieve the phone, Sally was killed, adding another homicide to Simon’s CV and another body to the pile.
Throughout the course of the 6-episode-long first series, the gang discovered that they were not the only ones who had acquired abilities. What is interesting about the powers is that they seem to be specifically tailored to each person: an 86-year old woman who yearns for the freedom of her younger days gains the ability to de-age herself; a baby with no father figure makes men want to take care of him; Jodie, having suffered from the hair-loss condition alopecia, becomes able to cause baldness, and a girl who is mocked for her moral, old-fashioned beliefs develops the power to turn people into cardigan-wearing do-gooders.
This final power was one which the gang had to deal with in the season finale – or rather Nathan had to, as the rest were taken under the girls’ spell, reduced to mindless shades of their former selves and initiated into ‘Virtue’ – an organisation encouraging self-respect and moral behaviour. After sharing an incredibly touching scene with a distinctly non-chavvy Kelly (“I didn’t like who I was”/“I did”), Nathan took to the rooftops with the ‘Virtue’ leader as a hostage to spout a fantastic speech for our generation:
“We’re young! We’re supposed to drink too much. We’re supposed to have bad attitudes and shag each other’s brains out. We are designed to party! We owe it to ourselves to party hard, we owe it to each other. This is it! This is our time! We had it all. We fucked up bigger and better than any generation that came before us. We were so beautiful!”
Unfortunately, after a tussle over Nathan’s (water)gun, they both plunged to their deaths – and the spell was broken when the girl hit the ground. Finishing with a panning shot through the graveyard and down underground - where we found Nathan waking up in his coffin and discovering that he possessed the ultimate superpower - the finale was a perfect end to a brilliant series. So what will season 2 bring? How long can the gang’s murders be kept secret? How many other people have been affected by the storm? Who is the masked BMX rider? And how the hell will Nathan get out of that coffin?!
Series 2 of the Misfits starts on Thursday 11th November on E4, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to get the answers to some of these questions!
