The loss of an icon is always a tragic affair , whether they die through nature’s course, or through self-destruction. When the world loses a star, after they have peaked the zenith of their legacy and the world is satisfied with their contribution to the industries, there is a catharsis felt among the fans who know that their idol had given all they had left to give. When the late Etta James passed, although it was a terribly heart-rending time for many around the world, we were left with a legacy that was entirely fulfilled and so it is much less a tragedy. When done right, a romantic comedy can be smart, sexy, funny and entertaining. It can explore and develop characters and themes, launch acting careers, and reflect our own lives, loves, fears and fantasies. But perhaps most of all, it can offer an escape from our own emotional failures: for two hours, we can identify with and laugh at someone else’s misfortunes, safe in the knowledge that – in the movies at least– there will always be a happy ending. |

Let’s face it; the main thing on any student's mind during the holidays and the beginning of the new semester is how much alcohol they can bin and still crawl to university the next day. Needless to say, the drink and the takeaways are the main cause of that sudden weight gain that creeps up on you by the third week. If you’ve kept up your new year diet then good for you. However, for the majority of the student population, who just can’t be arsed, here are some tips on keeping your alcoholic calorie intake down so you can keep your waists trim and your glasses full well into the New Year. |

Pulled Apart By Horses have kicked 2012 off to a fine start, the new album ‘Tough Love’ is a stomping hardcore rock record that showcases a more mature sound than their self-titled debut released in 2010. StudentPunch went and watched the boys on the first night of their new tour and talked to lead guitarist James Brown.
