Glasgow Vintage Fashion for Men
The ‘worn’ look of vintage clothing has crept back into current trend recently. It seems as though every man is seeking that dirt-stained, ‘Born to Run’, Bruce Springsteen-style leather jacket with an old pair of leather boots to match. Even in ladies fashion, a big, knitted cardigan your grandma may have knitted with a scarf from the 70’s are now specifically sought items. The repetitive sterility of high-street clothing has seen more attention directed towards second-hand, one-off ‘pieces.’
As fun as it sounds buying an expensive, £250+ jacket from ‘All Saints’ and rolling about the ground to create that vintage, retro look, there are several cost-effective, stylish shops that cater to the classic, rustic image that many are seeking. For a student, an item of clothing that can stand the test of time can come in handy, as I’m sure we have all experienced unplanned spillages or more recently, decking it on the icy roads. Not many students can afford to turn their nose up at a bargain, and there are certainly plenty to be found in the vintage racks with many big name designers part of the collections. Plus, there is a certain privilege and prestige of wearing completely unique items that are stitched together with the craftsmanship of yesteryear. This individualistic style can also claim to be environmentally friendly as it is, after all, a form of recycling. So if its something from your favourite decade, or even bringing back Victorian-chic, Glasgow has an extensive collection of second-hand shops catering for all styles. Here are a few options to get you started:
The West End of Glasgow holds many of Glasgow’s finest vintage shops, such as ‘We Love To Boogie’ on 100 Byres Road, with menswear, ladieswear and whole range of accessories with a fashionable coffee shop to boot.
Further along the road is ‘Vintage Guru on 195 Byres Road, with an extensive collection of jackets, footwear and gold jewellery.
Nearby is the popular ‘Watermelon’ on 603 Great Western Road, which also contains some flamboyant pieces.
‘Retro’ in Otago Street, Kelvinbridge is another option, with many beautiful, embroidered, Victorian-esque pieces at a good price.
If you are in the city centre, a wide range of vintage clothing is available near the Trongate at 101 King St in the form of ‘Mr. Ben’s.’ This is one of the bigger shops and has wide collection of knitwear and jackets.
