Dykeenies - Nothing Means Everything
This album is now three year old but it still stands up amongst other bands of its genre as an absolute musical gem. I can’t remember the last time I bought an album and didn’t get sick of it by the end of the month. The Dykeenies manage to combine aggressive riffs with anthemic and often ridiculously catchy lyrics and melodies.
Often clubbed together with other “indie rock” bands I think the Dykeenies stand up and hold a ground of their own. Kicking the album off with “The Panic” (which is on a loop in my head right now heading towards exams which I still haven’t figured out how to revise for) the guys give you no room to move, you are caught and there’s no escape until you finish this epic album. I can’t decide whether it’s his Scottish lilt, or just that his voice is so unique but no other male singer gives me quite the same shiver as Brian Henderson.
Songs that definitely cannot be missed from this album include, Stitches, Clean Up Your Eyes and Symptoms. For fans of The Futureheads, The Cribs and Blocparty, and also for people that enjoys hearing a room break out into over done (and often awful) enthusiastic Scottish accents! The only problem I have with these guys, is that there’s not more to listen to!
