Bol - An Island Paradise

StudentPunch - A Mix of Everything Student! - Bol - An Island Paradise

sailing-boats-croatia-brac-bol-zlatni-ratThe beautiful town of Bol on the Croatian island of Brac is a paradise waiting to be discovered. A ferry leaves daily from Split on the mainland to Bol at four o’clock (half past four on Fridays) and the journey takes about an hour. The journey costs around three pounds meaning the ferry is always quite busy and tickets should be bought as early as possible.

Accommodation on the island is affordable (with an exchange rate of 1.00 British Sterling Pounds = 8.62 Croatian Kuna) making it particularly appealing to young travelers. Arriving in Bol is a breathtaking experience as a result of its crystalline water and attractive hillside and restaurants.  However some locals do tend to hound visitors on arrival, suggesting their own accommodation is superior to any in mind. To avoid this harassment it is recommended individuals research and book their own accommodation before arrival.

A particularly low cost option for accommodation is to camp in the Dominikanski Monastery campground. Situated on the eastern side of the town, it is kept tidy and friendly staff are keen to help visitors and recommend tourist attractions. The shower and toilet facilities are clean and fully functioning, a high standard for the rate of fourteen pounds per night per tent. Church bells ring every morning and evening at seven o’clock, annoying for those who like a lie in but a handy alarm for keen tourists.

The location of the campsite is perfect for beach lovers and those who appreciate an idyllic view as about seven metres away from the monastery gate are two very clean pebbled beaches. To make the most of the location I recommend experiencing a sun rise and set at least once on your visit as the occurrence is stunning, transforming the sky into an array of colours. For the beaches, a dress code applies (no nude sunbathing) due to the religious setting; however there are no other restrictions to visitors and the nature of the beach is very relaxed and is accompanied by a charming ice cream stand.

The campsite is a short ten minute walk from the centre of Bol where one finds its supermarkets, restaurants and water taxi service to the unique shape changing beach, the Zlatni Rat. A famous attraction to visitors, the pinnacle of the beach alters in appearance with the tide and wind. A must-see for all tourists the Zlatni Rat is a popular sunbathing spot and a gateway for the adventurous brave enough to try water sports. The available sports are parachuting, jet skiing, surfing, wind surfing and scuba diving. For the more family orientated banana boats and pedal boats are available for hire, and for those that are not keen on the water- there are plenty of cafes! The beach is host to international races and has safety nets to protect overly keen swimmers from passing boats.

The island is affordable for those with a lower budget and has a relaxing nature allowing one to escape from the realities of life.
