Being Human Series 3
It isn’t easy being human; just ask Mitchell, George and Annie. Although that could be because they’re not, strictly speaking, human. BBC3’s fantastic series about three supernatural flatmates returned this month and, if the first episode is anything to go by, we could be in for some exciting viewing over the next few weeks.
The first series saw best friends Mitchell and George (a vampire and werewolf respectively) move into a flat, only to find it already occupied by a young ghost named Annie, who had been murdered by her boyfriend. Together, the three battled a terrifying vampire cult, took on the werewolf who sired George, saved Annie from the other side and fought to survive the interest of an evil scientist – all the while attempting to appear like your average 20-somethings. Throughout the last two series, they have all struggled with their own personal demons: Mitchell often finds it difficult to ignore the lure of the dark-side; Annie struggles to come to terms with the fact that she will never lead a normal life, and George can’t forgive himself for turning girlfriend Nina into a werewolf. The events of last series forced the gang to flee Bristol for rural Wales, where they plan to lay low for a while.
But Annie is stuck in limbo after she was sucked through a doorway into purgatory in the season 2 cliff-hanger...can Mitchell get her back? Those who saw the series opener last week will already know that answer to that; all I will say is that it looks as though the gang’s troubles are far from behind them. Who are the mysterious father and son werewolves? What does Lia’s warning to Mitchell mean? And what dastardly deeds does evil vampire Herrick have in mind?
With brilliant scripts and a fantastic cast, Being Human is one of the best shows that Britain has to offer. The supernatural elements make for exciting storylines, but it is the human touches and the connection between the three leads that really sets it apart. Hilarious, but incredibly moving, it is a genuine and touching show about life, love and what it really means to be human.
Being Human continues Sundays at 9pm on BBC3, or catch up with the episodes you’ve missed on BBCiplayer.
